Ofsted's chief inspector says he wants some school governors in England to be paid and to provide more professional leadership. Sir Michael Wilshaw is to launch an online at-a-glance report card for each school, which he wants governors to use to hold head teachers to account. He is also set to attack governors who are "ill-informed" and "not able to make good decisions".

What are your thoughts on this matter? Should Governors be paid to promote professional leadership or should it stay a voluntary post which is part of the schools community? Does this not set a precedence for all school governors to be paid, not just the select few as proposed? Should we just replace the Governors who fail to meet expectations? Miss B.
I don't know about paying Governors, but if they were to be paid, then maybe they should have a more active/defined role in the running of the school they are governor to? And if they are going to pay one then I think they should pay all otherwise it is not entirely fair.
ReplyDeleteAs for governors who fail to meet expectations - instead of just replacing them, I think an opportunity should be given for them to improve - or for that matter all governors should have some sort of training for the role (it there isn't any in place already)
I agree! If we are going to start judging the competence of governors we should provide some kind of training for them in order to give them a fighting chance. I am not sure if they are provided with a manual of expectations/what the job involves and duties etc - I will investigate this and see what I can find! Thanks
